To set up a complete Ajax home alarm, plan your coverage, choose compatible equipment, create your account and space, connect the hub, add and test each device, then configure arming and alerts before handover. Step 1: map the home and the way you use it

Sketch the front and rear entrances, accessible windows, hallways and any detached garage. Mark the route you use to enter and disarm the alarm, plus rooms people may move through at night. An opening contact reports a door or window opening; a motion detector covers movement within its detection area. Plan both around the risks you want to address.

For example, a single-storey home might need contacts at its main entrances, motion detection along selected internal routes, a keypad near the usual entry and an indoor siren. This is a planning example, not a universal kit or a promise that a particular number of detectors covers your home.

Mark each proposed device and the job it must do.

Step 3: set up the Ajax app, account and rooms

Install the official Ajax Security System app and complete account verification. Use your own account rather than sharing an installer’s login. Enable two-factor authentication through the app’s account-protection settings and follow the authenticator instructions. Give other household members their own access when required.

Create a space for the property and add clearly named rooms, such as Entry or Garage. A space groups the devices at that property; creating it alone does not create a working intrusion alarm. Create at least one room before adding devices. App labels can change, so use the linked current instructions if your screen differs.

Step 4: connect the hub and check its communication paths

Follow your hub’s manual to connect mains power and the supported internet connection, switch it on and add it in the app using its identifier or QR code. Confirm that the hub appears online before moving on. For Hub 2 Plus, the manufacturer documents Ethernet, Wi-Fi and cellular communication; do not assume every hub offers those same connections.

If cellular backup is part of the design, confirm the SIM, service plan, coverage and model-specific configuration. Place the hub where its required connections and device signals can work reliably. Record the chosen communication paths for handover, and arrange electrical work through the appropriate professional rather than modifying mains wiring yourself.

Step 5: add and name each detector, keypad and siren

With the hub online and the system disarmed, follow each device’s pairing instructions: choose Add device, enter or scan its identifier, assign a recognisable name and room, and switch on the device when instructed. Check that the new device appears in the app with the expected state before adding the next one.

Use names that make alerts actionable: Rear sliding door is more useful than Sensor 3. Match each label to your equipment list. If pairing fails, check the device’s compatibility, power, proximity during enrolment and whether it belongs to another system. Follow its manual rather than repeatedly resetting the whole installation.

Step 6: test signal strength before permanent mounting

Test devices at their intended positions with doors closed and the home arranged as it normally is. Walls, floors and nearby objects can change radio performance. Use the Jeweller signal-strength test and any additional tests required for the selected device. A published open-space radio range is not a promise of coverage through your home.

For MotionProtect Jeweller, Ajax recommends two or three signal bars. If a position performs poorly, investigate another location or a compatible range extender and retest. Temporary mounting is for testing; follow the manual’s permanent fixing method so the device and tamper protection operate as designed.

Step 7: check opening contacts and motion coverage

For the original DoorProtect Jeweller, Ajax specifies the magnet on the marked right-hand side: the small magnet operates within 1 cm and the large one within 2 cm. Use the manual for your exact detector, mounting arrangement and surface; those figures are not universal across the Ajax range. Open and close the entrance and confirm that the app shows the correct state.

For MotionProtect Jeweller, the documented mounting height is 2.4 metres. Follow its location restrictions and sensitivity guidance, then run the detection-zone test along the routes you want covered. Pet immunity depends on the installation and animal behaviour; discuss furniture that lets animals climb near the detector. Check the actual room instead of relying only on a pet-weight claim.

Step 8: configure entry, exit, Night Mode and alerts

Agree which entrance is used for normal arrival and departure, then configure the appropriate entry/exit behaviour for that route. Avoid applying a delay to every detector by default. Check Night Mode separately so residents can follow their agreed nighttime routine while selected areas remain protected.

Invite the people who need access, set their permissions and configure notification preferences. If using photo verification or video, agree who may view it. Step 9: complete a recorded commissioning and handover check

Arrange a controlled test with everyone affected. Tell a connected monitoring provider before testing and follow its test procedure. Work through devices one at a time so a missed event can be traced to a location, setting or communication path. A detector appearing online is not the same as a fully tested alarm.

Can I set up an Ajax alarm myself?
