SIL & SDA Home Wi-Fi, IT and VLAN Design Melbourne

An integrated assistive technology system needs a network designed around its devices, users and essential functions. Rhodium Security designs and sets up the IT and communications infrastructure supporting SIL and SDA homes, from Cat6A connection points to managed Wi-Fi and separate AT networks.

Cat6A cabling and network infrastructure

We document the structured cabling supporting the AT system, with connection locations, managed switches, power-over-Ethernet (PoE) requirements and equipment cabinet or rack provisions. The layout and network topology help coordinate cable routes and equipment locations with the building team. Customer cabling requirements and manufacturer instructions form part of the project design references.

Whole-dwelling Wi-Fi and access point planning

Access points are planned around the dwelling layout and the devices that need wireless coverage. Bedrooms, shared spaces and support areas can have different requirements. Walls, equipment locations and device capabilities affect the final placement. We confirm the design and agreed coverage checks for the property rather than promising a fixed internet speed from an access point specification.

  • Identify where participant and support interfaces will be used.
  • Record wired and wireless requirements for each proposed device.
  • Plan access point locations, cabling and PoE connections.
  • Include coverage and functional checks in the commissioning scope.

Separate AT and IoT networks with managed access

A dedicated AT/IoT network or virtual local area network (VLAN) helps organise connected equipment separately from other uses. The design also needs explicit rules for approved controls, intercoms and support interfaces to communicate. Network separation alone does not establish security: account permissions, device configuration, update responsibilities and access rules are coordinated together.

UPS support and local operation

Nominated communications equipment, the AT controller or gateway and emergency communication interfaces are included in backup-power coordination. Essential accessibility functions should retain local operation and appropriate manual or emergency control. The electrical consultant is responsible for final load calculations and emergency-power engineering; we document the AT interfaces and nominated equipment requirements.

A network the responsible team can manage

The handover scope should identify equipment, approved access, configuration records and support responsibilities. Agree who owns network and controller accounts, how staff access is changed and who approves future updates. Keep credentials out of ordinary enquiry emails. For an existing SIL home, send the suburb, current equipment models and a general description of any coverage or integration problems.

Common project questions

Do you include access points and VLANs in the AT design?

Yes. Our scope includes wireless access points, managed switches, PoE, whole-dwelling Wi-Fi planning and a separate AT/IoT network or VLAN where specified. The topology and access requirements are documented for the project.

Will a VLAN prevent all unwanted access?

No. A VLAN is one part of the network design. Access rules, participant permissions, secure account management and device configuration also need to be planned and maintained.

Does backup power keep the internet running?

UPS support is specified for nominated local equipment. It does not guarantee an external internet service remains available. Essential AT and emergency communication functions need an appropriate local and fallback design.
