4K home security cameras can provide a detailed image, but resolution is only one part of a useful CCTV system. In a typical UHD specification, 4K is 3840 × 2160 pixels, about 8.3 million pixels, often marketed as 8MP. Check the exact camera specification, lens, lighting and recorder settings. Does 4K mean every part of the system records in 4K?

No. Read the camera recording resolution separately from the recorder’s monitor output. A 4K HDMI output describes a display connection; it does not establish the resolution of each connected camera or its saved footage. Confirm the supported recording resolution, frame rate and number of cameras operating together.

Hikvision’s 8MP camera documentation provides a 3840 × 2160 example. This is a specification example, not a recommendation of that particular model for your home. Ask for the same information on the exact camera you intend to buy.

Is a 4K camera always better at night?

No. Axis explains that sensor and pixel size affect image quality, including low-light performance. Resolution alone is not a reliable night-view comparison. Ask to review a moving subject at the distance and lighting you expect, including headlights or a bright porch light if they affect the view.

Decide whether each position needs an overview or close detail. A wide driveway picture can still leave a person at the far gate too small to assess. Match the lens and mounting position to that job, and discuss infrared or visible-light operation for the exact model.

Plan the recorder, network and storage together

Check recorder compatibility and performance with all intended cameras connected. Include the resolution and frame rate of saved footage, simultaneous playback, export quality and any event-analysis limitations.
