Outdoor home security cameras need to suit both the view and the mounting location. A sheltered front door, exposed driveway and narrow side path can need different lenses, lighting and installation details. Give every outdoor camera a specific job

Walk the approaches to your home and mark the points you want to review later. Record the approximate distance between each camera and its intended subject. A camera looking across an entire front yard may provide an overview while a separate entrance camera gives a closer view of a visitor.

  • Front door: consider backlighting, porch roofs and the direction a visitor approaches.
  • Driveway: distinguish an overview of parked vehicles from the detail required at a gate or garage entrance.
  • Side path: note gates, downpipes and nearby walls that can block the view or reflect camera lighting.
  • Rear access: include detached garages, fences and vegetation, with a clear plan for power and cabling.

Check the whole installation for outdoor exposure

Confirm the exact model’s environmental rating, permitted temperatures and mounting instructions. A rating on the camera housing does not establish that an exposed cable connection or an unsuitable mounting box is protected. Ask which seals, connectors, junction boxes and cable-entry arrangements the installation needs.

Show the proposed location in photos and identify direct rain exposure, nearby watering and difficult maintenance access. A camera under an eave still needs a suitable installation. Keep the mount accessible for safe inspection and cleaning, and include that practical requirement when agreeing the location.

Evaluate your driveway and side gate after dark

Take an evening photo from a safe position to show the light available at your entrance. Include headlights, reflective walls and the route someone takes from a dark area into a bright one. Ask to assess a moving person in the proposed view rather than judging only a still image.

Infrared lighting can produce a black-and-white night view, while some models support visible-light colour modes. Check which modes the chosen camera actually offers and whether visible light would disturb a bedroom. Axis documentation also explains that exposure choices affect motion blur and that infrared intensity may need adjustment when reflections occur. Settings should be assessed on the installed model.

Choose the connection and recorder before ordering

For wired IP cameras, confirm compatible power, network connections and the cable route to the recorder or switch. For Wi-Fi models, check coverage at the actual outdoor mounting position and identify how the camera is powered. Do not assume that a signal inside the house will be suitable beyond a brick wall or in a detached garage.

Select a recording arrangement as part of the same plan. Confirm whether recording is continuous or event-based, where footage is stored and how you will export it. If you already have a recorder, provide its full model number and verify the functions supported by the proposed cameras.
