A useful home CCTV plan starts with a few specific questions: what happened, where did someone enter, and can you see enough detail to understand the event? A camera count alone does not answer them. Before comparing kits, sketch your property and give each proposed camera a job.
Give each view a clear purpose
Mark the front entrance, driveway, side gate and rear access on a simple plan. For each position, write down the subject and its approximate distance: a visitor at the door, a person approaching the garage, or movement along a side path. Separate an overview of the property from a close view of an entrance.
For example, a wide driveway view may show a vehicle arriving while a separate entrance view provides a more useful view of the visitor. Do not assume that enlarging a small part of a wide recording will reveal detail that was never captured. Walk the routes someone actually takes, including under eaves and around parked vehicles.
- Mark walls, gates, trees and parked cars that could block a view.
- Note approximate camera-to-subject distances and proposed mounting positions.
- Choose the most important view before deciding whether four, six or eight cameras fit the job.
Choose the lens for the position
Field of view depends on the lens focal length and sensor size. Compare the published viewing angle of the exact model, rather than treating every 2.8 mm lens as identical. A broad view and a concentrated view solve different problems.
Bring the proposed mounting height and distance to the subject when discussing lenses. Ask how a person will appear in the image at that distance, and whether the camera can be aimed at the approach rather than mainly at the top of someone’s head. If a product offers combined colour and lens options, keep those combinations intact: a black housing may not offer every lens listed for white.

Check the night scene, not just the daytime photo
Take a second set of property photos after dark. Note porch lighting, headlights, reflective walls and the route between a bright area and a darker one. Ask to compare moving subjects as well as a still scene when evaluating a proposed camera.
Lighting modes need a practical decision. Hikvision describes Smart Hybrid Light cameras that use infrared when no person or vehicle is present and switch to white light after detection. Check whether that behaviour suits a bedroom window, a narrow side passage or your front entrance. The available modes and controls depend on the particular model.

Plan recording and installation together
List the recorder location, available power and network connection, and likely cable routes. Tell your installer about difficult roof access, multiple storeys, detached structures and finished surfaces. These details help define the installation scope before equipment is purchased.
Decide how far back you want to review recordings and whether recording is continuous or event-based. Storage depends on the actual video bitrate and recording settings, so a drive size does not promise the same number of days in every system. Ask for an estimate for your selected cameras and settings, and check whether the kit includes a hard drive.
