Video Doorbell vs Video Intercom: Which Entry Setup Fits?

Compare video doorbells and intercoms for visitor views, answering, recording and gate access. Prepare a practical entry brief for Rhodium Security.

Updated

Choose a video doorbell or video intercom around how visitors arrive and who answers them. Separate seeing a visitor, speaking to them, recording an event and controlling an entry point. The available functions depend on the exact outdoor station, indoor station, app and associated hardware.

Map the visitor’s approach and standing position

Take a photo from where the visitor stands, not just a photo of the existing bell. Note steps, porch shade, strong backlighting and whether a gate separates the person from the house. Ask how the chosen lens shows a visitor’s face at that position.

A doorbell fitted beside a recessed entrance may have a different view from an intercom at a driveway gate. If parcel visibility matters, include the place deliveries are usually left. Verify the actual image framing instead of assuming every device sees both a face and the ground.

Decide who must answer and from where

Describe whether you want a phone, an indoor screen or both. Include family members who do not routinely carry a phone. Ask how calls are delivered, which users can answer and what happens when internet access is unavailable.

For two entry points, ask how you identify which entrance is calling. Also discuss call volume, accessibility and the location of any indoor station. A useful household test is whether someone can answer while their phone is charging elsewhere.

  • Identify each entrance and its normal visitor position.
  • List phone and indoor-screen requirements.
  • Ask which functions need internet access or a subscription.

Treat answering and recording as separate features

Ask whether visitor calls and other events can be recorded, where those recordings are stored and how they are retrieved. Do not assume that a live call leaves a recording. Verify storage and any subscription requirements against the exact model documentation.

If a separate CCTV camera already covers the entrance, compare its view with the entry device. It may answer a different question, such as the approach to the door rather than the visitor standing directly in front of it.

Specify entry control safely and precisely

If remote door or gate release is required, have the installer assess the existing lock or gate equipment, power arrangements and compatible interface. Put the intended function and exact hardware in the quote. A camera doorbell does not automatically operate an existing lock.

Discuss who can authorise entry, how access is removed and what happens during a power or network fault. Keep normal manual entry and an agreed operating routine in the design rather than relying solely on a phone.

Prepare a quote that can be compared

Bring entry photos, approximate distances, existing device model numbers and any plans for a second entrance. Ask for separate outdoor station, indoor station, power, storage, cable and setup costs. For a gate position, mention the available cable route and distance to the house.

Request a handover demonstration of answering, the agreed entry-control function and recording retrieval if specified. Confirm who owns the app account and how household access is maintained.
