Ring Camera vs Wired CCTV: Recording and Coverage

Compare Ring cameras with wired CCTV: recorded video, subscriptions, entrances and whole-home coverage. Bring your plan to Rhodium Security in Lynbrook.

BY RHODIUM SECURITY · BUYING GUIDE

Updated

A Ring camera and a recorder-based CCTV system can answer different home-security needs. Start with whether you want to answer the front door, review an event later, or record several approaches to the property. This is a buying comparison, not a hands-on Ring review. Rhodium’s camera catalogue offers Dahua, Hikvision and HiLook; this page is not a Ring stock listing.

One entrance or several views?

Write down the question each camera should answer. A visitor at the doorstep needs a different view from a person walking down a long driveway. A doorbell view may leave a side gate or rear entrance outside its frame. Equally, fitting multiple cameras does not automatically give a useful close view of a visitor.

For example, a townhouse owner may prioritise answering one entry point from a phone. A house with a garage, rear gate and separate side access needs a coverage plan before choosing a brand. Sketch these routes and mark where a parked car or wall blocks the proposed view.

Compare the recording you will actually use

Ring’s Australian support says reviewing recorded camera and doorbell video requires a Ring subscription. Check the current plan for the exact device and features you need. Treat access to a live view separately from access to yesterday’s recording.

For a wired CCTV quote, ask which recorder and drive are included, what recording schedule will be configured, and how you export a clip. Local recording does not mean every remote-access, cloud or monitoring feature is free. Compare the full equipment, storage and service cost over the same period.

  • Can I retrieve a clip from the previous evening?
  • Is the required recording plan included in my budget?
  • What remains available during an internet outage?

Separate power from the network connection

Ask whether the shortlisted Ring model uses a rechargeable battery, a plug-in supply or fixed wiring. A wireless network connection does not describe how the camera is powered. For a battery-powered position, consider safe access for charging and the routine someone will actually follow.

For a proposed wired system, include cable routes, recorder location and difficult roof access in the quote. Compare the work involved with your property constraints, including whether you can obtain approval for mounting and cabling.

Use the same test for both options

Ask to see a moving person at the distance you care about, then find and export that event. Check the view after dark and how a bright doorway affects the image. Compare the footage at normal playback speed, rather than relying only on a still promotional image.

  • Keep the exact camera model and subscription plan with the quote.
  • Check whether the entrance and side access need separate views.
  • Ask who owns the app account and how access is removed.

Compare your shortlist at the showroom

Bring your entrance photo, a simple property sketch and the Ring model you are considering. We can discuss where a recorder-based system would add coverage and where a simple entrance device may meet your brief. Confirm the required demonstration before visiting; a Ring demonstration is not promised.

Visit Rhodium Security at 12 Stelvio Close, Lynbrook VIC 3975. Working camera demonstrations are available; call 03 8787 8779 before travelling to confirm a particular model or feature. Public customers are welcome without a trade account. Open Monday–Friday 9am–5pm and Saturday 9am–1pm; Sunday closed.
