Arlo Camera vs Wired CCTV: Recording and Access Checklist

Compare Arlo cameras with wired CCTV by hub compatibility, recording, power and access. Bring your model shortlist to Rhodium Security in Lynbrook.

Updated

An Arlo camera may suit a particular position or app workflow, while a wired CCTV system may suit several fixed views. Compare the exact equipment and recording functions against your property rather than choosing on brand alone. This guide is not a hands-on Arlo review or an Arlo stock listing: Rhodium offers Dahua, Hikvision and HiLook camera equipment.

Check the camera and hub combination

Arlo’s Direct Storage Access documentation describes a function for supported SmartHub arrangements. Do not assume every Arlo camera, base station or hub provides the same local-storage access. Ask the seller to confirm your camera, hub, storage medium and app requirements together.

Write down how you will retrieve an older recording. Access to a live picture, a cloud event and a locally stored clip are different questions. Check the current subscription requirements for the functions you intend to use, including any optional detection or recording services.

Plan positions around maintenance and reception

For a battery-powered model, consider safe access for charging and who will check its status. For a powered model, ask where the supply will come from. Include the actual wall construction, distance and obstructions when discussing network reception; reception beside the router is not evidence for the garden position.

For a wired alternative, identify a possible cable route and recorder location. Ask about the installation work and finish before comparing the purchase price. These constraints may make different approaches sensible at different parts of the same property.

Ask for the event you need to review

Imagine a person approaching the driveway, stopping beside a vehicle and then leaving. Tell the seller which parts must appear in the recording. Ask to see the configured trigger, recording schedule and any limitations for the selected device and power mode.

Review a sample event from the app or recorder and export a clip. Check how you find a date and time and how another household member accesses the same event. A reassuring notification is not proof that all required footage has been retained.

  • Confirm recording mode on the exact camera.
  • Verify where footage is stored and how it is retrieved.
  • Ask what happens to recording and access during an internet outage.

Compare costs and account handover

Include hubs, storage, optional subscriptions, mounting, charging accessories and setup in your budget. For a wired quote, include the recorder drive and cable work. Use the same time period when comparing recurring charges.

Ask who will own the primary account, how a lost phone is handled and how former users are removed. Keep a written list of equipment and configured recording settings so an extension or future service visit starts with accurate information.

Compare your shortlist at the showroom

Bring the Arlo camera and hub models you are considering, your key recording question and a sketch of the property. Ask to compare playback and export on available wired systems. An Arlo demonstration or stock holding is not promised.
