BY RHODIUM SECURITY · BUYING GUIDE
Updated
A Swann security camera system should be compared by its exact recorder, cameras and package contents. Brand name and camera count alone do not tell you whether an existing cable run can be reused or what an upgrade requires. This is a buying checklist, not a tested Swann review or Swann stock offer. Rhodium’s camera catalogue includes Dahua, Hikvision and HiLook.
Identify DVR, NVR or standalone cameras first
Swann distinguishes DVR systems using analogue cameras and coaxial connections from NVR systems using IP cameras and Ethernet. It also describes standalone wireless options. Identify the system family on the actual box or model documentation before comparing it with another kit.
If you are upgrading an older installation, photograph recorder and camera labels, connectors and cable markings. A similar-looking connector does not prove every camera function or resolution is supported by a different recorder. Have compatibility checked before assuming an old cable can be retained.

Compare a complete kit with a complete kit
List the recorder model, number of supplied cameras, lens options, drive capacity and accessories for each quote. Separate recorder channels from supplied camera count: a four-camera pack may have room for more cameras, but expansion still needs compatibility and storage checks.
Also compare the cable and mounting scope. A retail box price does not describe the work required for a double-storey house, detached garage or finished wall. Ask which items are included and which are optional before comparing totals.
- Are the exact camera and recorder models stated?
- Is the hard drive included or selected separately?
- Are lens, colour and storage options the same in both prices?
Test useful footage rather than a headline resolution
Choose a front-door position and the far end of the driveway as two different test scenes. Ask what detail the proposed lens gives at each distance. Request a moving-person night example where possible; lighting and placement matter to the result.
Use the recorder to locate and export a short event. If one household member will usually manage recordings, they should try the workflow before deciding. Do not assume that a feature shown in one manufacturer’s range exists in every kit.
Write an upgrade and handover plan
For an existing system, decide whether you are replacing everything or adding a view. Ask which equipment can stay, which must change, and who will configure the app and recording settings. Include how the system will be checked after installation and how you will recognise a recording fault.
Keep account ownership, firmware support and service contact details with the model list. These are practical points to compare between suppliers without assuming a particular brand or sales channel offers better support.
Compare your shortlist at the showroom
Bring the Swann kit model or quote and photos of any existing equipment labels. We can compare it with catalogue-backed Dahua, Hikvision and HiLook options and discuss the complete scope. Swann display availability is not claimed.
