Start with the view you need
Make a short list of positions before choosing Dahua equipment: front entrance, driveway, side access and rear door. For each one, decide whether you need a broad overview or detail at a particular point. Bring this plan to the showroom and compare exact models against the same requirements.
- Mark the subject you need to see and the approximate distance from the proposed camera.
- Note walls, eaves, trees and parked vehicles that may obstruct the view.
- Record available lighting and whether visible camera illumination would disturb a bedroom or neighbour.
Compare the full model number, not just megapixels
Two Dahua cameras with the same resolution can serve different purposes. Keep the complete model number, including its suffix, alongside the selected lens and housing option when comparing a quote or product listing.
- Compare the specified lens and field of view for the mounting position.
- Check the exact night-lighting, audio and event-detection features you need.
- Confirm weather and impact ratings, mounting dimensions and compatible junction boxes for the location.
- Treat product-family names as a starting point; use the specification for the model and generation being quoted.
Check the recorder before replacing or adding cameras
Bring the existing recorder model and the camera list when planning an upgrade. Compatibility includes more than displaying an image. Ask which recording resolution, event, audio and playback functions will work with the selected combination.
- Identify the camera connection and power requirements before reusing existing cabling.
- Check available recorder channels, supported camera inputs and any required PoE capacity.
- Agree the desired recording retention and settings before selecting storage; a drive capacity alone does not guarantee a number of days.

- Ask to discuss playback, finding an event and exporting footage on the proposed recorder.
- Check who will manage the system, what phone viewing requires and which functions depend on internet access.
- Leave with a written equipment shortlist and identify any installation or compatibility checks still needed.
